The role of the Chairperson in modern organizations cannot be understated. Extensive international research shows that it is indeed critical. Many one organizations have submerged because of their Chairperson’s inability to lead his/her board. The successful Chairperson has three duties and six disciplines. He/she must manage his/her board, the Board’s and his/her own relations with the CEO and the organization’s relations with all stakeholders communities. The successful world-class Chairperson must be effective in delineating authority and responsibility boundaries, in securing that all board members make sense of all corporate issues and interrogate the arguments, in influencing responsibly the outcome, in living the values and in developing him/herself and his/her board individually and collectively.
